Amazon Ungating: Getting Approved for Restricted Brands & Categories

1 Jun 2026 9 min read

A lot of the good, profitable products are "gated" — meaning Amazon won't let you sell them until you prove you're a legit, authorized source. Ungating is just the process of handing over that proof. It feels scary the first time, I get it. But it's a fixed procedure you can repeat once you've done it once.

First, pick what you want to unlock

Decide the exact brand or category you want in on. Then find a distributor that's recognized and accepted for that brand or category — because Amazon wants the invoice to come from a source it trusts.

The process, step by step

  • Open an account with the distributor, submit your Resale Certificate, then request access to their catalog.
  • Find a cheap product within the target brand/category on Amazon, note its ASIN, and add it to your Seller account to confirm it's restricted.
  • Confirm the distributor has at least the minimum units (usually around 10), then order that many.
  • When you order, make the company name, billing address and phone number match your Amazon account exactly.
  • Photograph the physical invoice clearly (or print a digital one and shoot that) for the upload.

The photos Amazon wants

Amazon usually asks for full product photos from every angle — front, top, sides, back, bottom — with the title, any nutritional info and the UPC barcode clearly visible and not covered up. A common one: a final reference photo with one unit in front and the rest of your units (say nine more) behind it, to prove you actually have the stock in hand.

If they say no

A denial isn't the end. Usually you can re-apply without buying more product, or open a case on your previous application asking what was missing and sending extra documents. Some brands need more than just the invoice, or won't allow third-party sellers at all — read the requirements carefully, and reach out to the brand or distributor directly when you have to.

And if you bought stock just to ungate and later decide not to sell it that way — some distributors take returns, so check their terms. Either way, keep every transaction in your books, and talk to a professional about handling them properly.
