How much should a freelancer charge?

The most common freelance mistake is pricing by what feels normal instead of what your life actually costs. Your rate has to cover your take-home income, your business expenses, the gaps between projects, and the taxes and platform fees that come off every invoice — all packed into the limited hours you can realistically bill. This freelance rate calculator turns those numbers into a clear hourly, daily and monthly rate in seconds.

It's built with Bangladeshi freelancers in mind: enter everything in Taka and see an indicative USD equivalent for Upwork, Fiverr and direct international clients. Treat the result as your floor — the minimum that keeps you sustainable — and raise it as your skills, portfolio and demand grow.

Common questions

How do I calculate my freelance hourly rate?

Add the monthly income you want to take home and your business expenses, multiply by 12 for the year, add a profit buffer, then gross it up for taxes and platform fees. Divide that by your realistic billable hours per year. This calculator does all of it instantly.

Why aren't billable hours the same as working hours?

A 40-hour week is never 40 billable hours. Admin, sales, learning, emails and breaks eat into it — most freelancers bill 25–32 hours. Charging as if all 40 are billable leaves you underpaid, so the calculator uses your real billable number.

Does it work for Bangladeshi freelancers (BDT)?

Yes. Enter everything in Bangladeshi Taka and you'll get rates in BDT, with an indicative USD equivalent for international clients on Upwork, Fiverr or direct deals. Switch the toggle to work in USD instead.

Should I include taxes and platform fees?

Yes — they come off the top of every invoice. Upwork/Fiverr fees, withdrawal charges and income tax can easily total 15–25%. The calculator grosses your rate up so you still hit your target after those deductions.

Hourly or fixed-price — which should I quote?

Use the hourly rate as your internal floor. For fixed-price quotes, estimate the hours honestly and multiply by this rate, then add a margin for risk. Never quote a fixed price below your hourly floor × estimated hours.

Is this calculator free?

Completely free and private. Everything runs in your browser — no sign-up and nothing is sent anywhere. Use it as often as you like to test different scenarios.
