What Happens After Launch: Hosting, Maintenance & Updates
Many first-time buyers think software is a one-time purchase. It isn't — it's more like a car that needs fuel and servicing. Knowing this upfront keeps your app fast, secure and online instead of slowly breaking. Here's what comes after launch.
Hosting & domain (recurring)
Your domain renews yearly, and hosting is a monthly or yearly cost based on your traffic. For a small business this is often modest, but it never goes to zero. Keep these accounts in your own name and note the renewal dates so your site never suddenly goes offline.
Security & updates
- Frameworks and libraries get security patches — they need applying.
- Phone OS updates can break old apps if they're not maintained.
- Backups protect you from data loss and hacks — set them up early.
Bug fixes & small improvements
Once real users arrive, they'll find edge cases nobody imagined, and they'll request small improvements. Budgeting a little time each month for this keeps users happy and stops small issues from becoming big ones.
How to plan for it
Pick one of two simple options: a monthly maintenance retainer (predictable, hands-off for you), or pay-per-task support (cheaper if your app is stable). Either way, agree on it before launch so there's always someone to call.
I offer ongoing maintenance and support so your product stays fast, secure and up to date after launch. If you already have an app that nobody is maintaining, I can take it over too.
